Grenada: Fall, 2016

8/5/2016 Greg left New Orleans to return to the boat. It is still on the hard in Clarke's Court Bay, Grenada. We rented a small apartment about a 10 minute walk from the boat yard so we could spend some time doing boat projects before launching the boat. That gave us an air conditioned place to sleep and a place we could cook and shower without the hassle of trying to do that on the boat/ in the boatyard. Liz Ann stayed home an extra 10 days to get some continuing education classes so she could renew her Physical therapy license when the time comes.Greg began working on his many boat projects such as installing a new, larger inverter, re-wiring the battery and high amperage 12 volt system, installed spinnaker pole controls on the mast, rigged a new preventer on the boom and oiled the teak, removed, inspected and tested the injectors, cleaned and polished the hull. He also had the boat bottom sanded and repainted with new barrier coat and copper coat. Hopefully, it will last the ten years they advertise.

8/15/2016 Liz Ann returned to Grenada and began her boat projects too: made a sailpack for the main so we don't have to haul the cover up and down everytime we raise/lower the sails; made new dinghy chaps, and some throw pillows for the main salon.

9/12/2016 We launched the boat and returned to Mt. Hartman Bay to anchor. Still had lots of boat projects to do such as sewing a new awning for the forward part of the deck and revising the main awning to work with our new lazyjack system. Also made covers for our 6 jerry cans and 4 for a friend who gave us some fabric. Greg installed a washdown pump and the new spreader we had to replace one that was cracked. Liz Ann repaired worn areas on the dodger and re-stitched the sun covers on the jib and staysail. Had to do those sails out on the deck as there wasn't enough room down below. Not many people can say that got sunburned while sewing! It peeled for weeks.

Next time I will remember to wear sunscreen when sewing on deck!

Amid all of this boat project mess, we still found time to have some fun. Secret Harbor Marina refurbished the pool at the top of the hill and we paid the small fee to use it. That gave us access to warm water showers too! What a bargain. We went swimming almost every afternoon at the pool and then got showers. We did get our exercise just getting to the pool: we either walked up a long steep road or walked up 75 stairs and another shorter, steep path. The ability to cool off after working on the boat all day was so worth it!  Then we would go back to the boat, have our sundowners and fix dinner. Made the evenings even nicer.

Ahhh... Cooling off after a hot day of boat projects

We met up with some people we had met last year including Henry and Catherine on Mowser, Jo and Gregg on Serenade, Bill and Joanna on Baidarka and Dave on Mythago. We met new friends, Jayne and Paul and Lily on Delphinus and Allen and Diane and Ian on Music. Our friends, Greig and Caroline made it back to Grenada around the end of September and we helped paint the bottom of their boat while they were hauled out.

We had dinner at the Aquarium restaurant with friends Jo and Gregg(Serenade), Dave(Mythago), and Linda and Chris(Troubadour).

We also made it back to the jerk chicken shack one day with Gregg, Fiona and Mark, and Dave. It was a hot walk but the jerk chicken made it worthwhile.

We tried to do the 950th hash but our bus never showed up. But we did manage to get one hike in and it was enough for the entire time we were here. Paul from Delphinus led us on a hike to the top of Mt. Qua Qua and then down to Concord Falls. It was very challenging to say the least. Poor Greg slipped and fell so many times, his shorts were covered in mud. Some areas were very steep and handholds were difficult to find. We were exhausted after the 5 1/2 hour hike and sore for a week. But it was fun anyway.

We also took a tour with Joanna, Bill, Dave, Greig and Caroline on Paul's Best Red Cab to Grenville. Paul showed us his home and his brother's shop. We went to the veggie market and the fish market and walked around town, visiting shops and street vendors. We had lunch at a cafeteria style restaurant called the Melting Pot. It overlooks the harbor and had great local food at even greater prices.

Dave was a great chef
We went to Roger's Beach Bar on Hog Island for a jam session one Sunday and attended several of the jam sessions in Secret Harbor on Tuesday nights. Love hearing Gary on that sax!

Unfortunately, Caroline got sick and she and Greig had to return to Canada for a while. Dave sailed off about 5 days ago to head up to Annapolis and then return to Canada. That leaves us with no buddy boat and a rather nebulous cruising plan. We will leave here tomorrow to head north with a few planned stops and thinking of stopping for the summer in Puerto Rico where we can leave the boat and spend some time at home again next summer. None of that is written in stone, or, as the sailors say, it is written in the sand at low tide.

Home for the Summer

3/31/2016  We left the boat on the hard in Grenada and headed home for some family time. We had lots of fun this summer, reconnecting with family and friends. Our eldest, Steven got married to our beautiful, sweet, new daughter-in-law, Emily on May 28 and we had lots of fun leading up to and on the day of the wedding.

We had a crawfish boil in April for friends and Liz Ann's side of the family (locals) as we usually do in the Spring. We boiled about 250 pounds of crawfish and untold amounts of potatoes, corn, garlic and onions. The weather cooperated and we had a beautiful day. (But forgot to take pictures.)

Then we were in pre-wedding mode with bridal and couple showers and having the pleasure of company at our home. Greg's Aunt Caryl from Oregon, his sister  Sue and husband, John and 2 of their daughters and one niece's fiance stayed with us and made for a fun time. We got to know our nieces, Elaine and Erin much better and met and got to know Elaine's fiance, Dan. We all had a good time together for a week.
5/26/2016 Another crawfish boil 2 days before the wedding gave Greg's side of the family a chance to meet Steven's fiancee, Emily and some of her family. Greg's brother Mike and his family flew in from California and his brother Patrick and wife, Cris came in from Georgia. Liz Ann's long time friend, Mary Eby and her husband made a special effort to come in early for the wedding in order to make the crawfish boil. And it was Mary's birthday!!  Which was, sadly, forgotten (at least by us) in all the excitement. Sorry about that, Mary.

5/27/2016 We had a great time at the rehearsal dinner at Ralph's on the Park and at the wedding at The Riverview Room at the Jax Brewery.

After the wedding, we had a little time to go on a swamp tour and visit the French Quarter with our Canadian and Oregonian parts of the family.

We spent time visiting with family and friends in New Orleans, teaching the U.S. Power Squadron Cruise Planning and Cruising class in New Orleans and then went to Canada for Elaine's wedding (Greg's niece) and to visit friends, Greig and Caroline in Halifax and to see Prince Edward Island.

We headed to Rothesay, New Brunswick to Greg's sister's house for a few days before Elaine's wedding. We had more Mulvany family time and lots of fun. Haven't seen this much of Greg's family since we've been married!

And then it was off to Halifax to visit with Greig and Caroline again.  They were great tour guides and showed us the south east coast of Nova Scotia.  Amazing how little I remembered from 45 years ago.

Stopped in the little town of Chester which had some pretty homes and some unusual art carved into the trees.

Then it was back to New Orleans for more friends and family time and Liz Ann's birthday.

Connor bought me my favorite cake for my birthday: half chocolate and half lemon doberge!
Now it's time to head back to Grenada and boat projects before we sail north this season.
